Criticism:
This book, the first of a series written by Lauren Kate, is a book very similar to the popular ones now since Twilight became famous. As one of those books, I think that this one is rather common and not very original, and it doesn't leave the reader a strong impression. It is well written and has some imaginative and surprising parts, but before this book I'd recommend The Mortal Instruments or Twilight, which are the same but, from my point of view, better. This book, in the other side, I thought was very similar to the Immortals series, by Alyson Noël. I havn't yet finished the series, but I'll read it when I have nothing else to read of which I'm especially enthusiastic; because this has been one of those books that doesn't leave the reader dying to know what happens next and doesn't make the reader completely fall in love with the characters, even though it is very good and exciting.
The main characters are typical and, even though you empathize with them, you don't completely feel the story as if you were one of them, which is what happens in the masterpieces. The main character seemed to me too cloying and neither the characters nor the plot are too realistic, apart from being absolutely depressing. In the other hand, the book is very mysterious and grabs the reader in many parts. It has romance, mystery- again, and action; and it is a very quick book to read. It is very entertaining and I'd recommend it to girls of between 12 and 16 years of age.
