Before anything, I'd like to say that even though this blog is written in English, I recommend you to do as I did and read the books I criticise in their original language (if you can). This way you'll like them much more and you'll find astute word games and double meanings which will help you read the book in all of its potential.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress - Dai Sijie

Criticism:
This book is very realistic and it shows us how China was just after Mao Zedong started to rule there. It is very touching and it demonstrates us, also, how art and literature can change and motivate people. It lacks a bit of plot, but this autobiography contains a beautiful message, although it is not as evident as in other books.
It barely has
any action or strong emotions, but you gradually start empathising with the characters and seeing their points of view. They are nothing really special or out of the ordinary, but they are described in a very subtle and at the same time profound way which makes the reader know their personalities without being conscious about it. Some people will think that this book is boring, and the style of its writing, its story and its plot is very similar to that of The road, by Miguel Delibes.
